Croatia (Hrvatska),a republic of former YUGOSLAVIA,made a unilateral declaration of independence on 25 June,1991.Sovereignty was not formally recognized by the international community until early in 1992.Located in south-east Europe,it is bounded to the west by the Adriatic Sea,to the north by SLOVENIA and ROMANIA,and to the south by BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA.Western Croatia lies in the Dinaric Alps. The eastern region, drained by the river Sava and Drava which both flow into the Danube,is low-lying and agricultural. The chief farming region is the Pannonian Plain.Over one third of the country is forested with beech and oak trees being predominant, and timber is a major export.Deposits of coal, bauxite, copper, petroleum, oil and iron ore are substantial, and most of the republic's industry is based on their processing. Is Istria in the north-west and on the Dalmatian coast tourism was a major industry until the Croatia became embroiled in the Serbo-Croat war prior to its secession in 1992.Following the formal recognition of Croatia's independence by the international community, the fighting abruptly ceased;however, the tourism industry continued to suffer from the effects of the on-going hostilities in other parts of the former YUGOSLAVIA.More recently, tourists are returning although there is a need to rebuild the infrastructure.
