Denmark TourDenmark is a small European state lying betweeen the North Sea and the entrance to the Baltic. It consists of a western peninsula and an eastern archipelago of 406 islands only 89 of which are populated. The country is very low lying and the proximity of the sea combined with the effect of the Gulf Stream result in warm sunny summers and cold cloudy winters. The scenery is very flat and monotonous but the acidic soils need a great deal of fertilization for a wide variety of crops to be grown. It is an agricutural country and three-quarters of the land is cultivated mostly by the rotation of grass, barley, oats and sugar beet.Animal husbandry is, however, the most important activity, its produce including the famous bacon and butter. It is estimated that 85% of the population lives in the towns and cities.Despite Denmark's limited range of raw materials it produces a wide range of manufactured goods and is famous for its imaginative desing of ceramics, furniture, silverware and porcelain, there being a permanent exibition of these in its capital.
