Hungary Tour

Hungary landlocked in the heartland of Europe, Hungary is dominated by the great plain to the east of the river Danube which runs north-south across the country and its tributaries include the Tisza, the longest river. In the west lies the largest lake in Central Europe, lake Balaton. Winters are severe, but the summers are warm and although wet in the west, summer droughts often occur in the east. Hungary experienced a modest boom in its economy in the 1970s and 1980s. The government invested money in improving agriculture by mechanizing farms, using fertilizers and bringing new land under cultivation. Yields of cereals for bread making and rice have since soared and large areas between the Danube and Tisza rivers are now used to grow vegetables. However, the use of these artificial fertilizers has caused water pollution. Industries have been carefully developed where adequate natural resources exist such as bauxite which is the country's main resource. New industries like electrical and electronic equipment are now being promoted and tourism is fast developing around Lake Balaton.
