Iceland TourIceland is a large island situated in a tectonically unstable part of the North Atlantic Ocean, just south of the Arctic Circle. The island has over 100 volcanoes,at least one of wich erupts every five years. One ninth of the country is covered with ice and snowfields and there are about 700 hot springs which are an important source of central heating, particularly in the volcanic areas. In the capital city, the majority of homes and industries are heated by this method. The climate is cool temperate but because of the effect of the North Atlantic Drift it is mild for its latitude. The south-west corner is the most densely populated area as the coast here is generally free from ice. Less than 1% of the land is cultivated mostly for fodder and root crops to feed sheep and cattle, with about 5% of the workforce thus engaged. The island's economy is based on its sea fishing industry which accounts for 70% of exports. Wool sweaters and sheepskin coats are also exported. The use of hydroelectric power is being developed for industrial use.
