Ireland TourIreland,Republic of is one of Europe's most westerly countries, situated in the Atlantic Ocean and separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. It has an equable climate, with mild south-west winds which makes temperatures uniform over most of the country. The Republic extends over four fifths of the island of Ireland and the west and south-west is mountainous, with the highest peak reaching 1041 m (3416 ft) at Carrauntoohil. The central plain is largely limestone covered in boulder clay which provides good farmland and pasture with about 80% of the land being under agriculture. The main rivers are the Erne and the Shannon. Livestock production is the most important including cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. The rural population tend to migrate to the cities, mainly Dublin, which is the main industrial centre and the focus of radio, television, publishing and communications. Lack of energy resources and remoteness from major markets has slowed industrial development, although the economy has improved in recent years with tourism showing a marked improvement.
