Macedonia TourMacedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of, under the name of Macedonia, declared its independence from Yugoslavia in November, 1991. However, GREECE, angered at the use of 'Macedonia' - also the name of the neighbouring Greek province - imposed a trade embargo and convinced the UN not to recognize the nation's independence. In 1993, Macedonia was admitted to the UN after changing its official name to The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In 1995 an agreement was reached with Greece whereby both countries would respect the territory, sovereignty and independence of the other, with Macedonia agreeing to adopt a new flag. A landlocked country, Macedonia shares its borders with ALBANIA, BULGARIA, Greece and YUGOSLAVIA. Its terrain is mountainous, covered with deep valleys and has several large lakes. The Vardar River divides the country, is the country's longest river and flows into Greece. Its climate consists of hot, dry summers and cold winters with considerable snow. It is the poorest of the six former Yugoslav republics but sustains itself through agriculture and the coal industries although manufactured goods, machinery and other fuel is imported. Some of its natural resources include chromium, lead, zink, nickel, iron ore and timber.
