Malta TourMalta, a small republic in the middle of the Mediterranean, lies just south of the island of Sicily. It comprises three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, which are made up of low limestone plateaux with little surface water. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry sunny summers and little rain. Lack of water has led to the production of desalination plants wcich produce up to 70% of the country's needs. Winters are cooler and wetter. Malta is virtually self-sufficient in agricultural products and exports potatoes, vegetables, wine and cut flowers. The British military base on Malta was once the mainstay of the economy but after the British withdrew in the late 1970s, the naval dockyard was converted for commercial shipbuilding and repairs, which is now one of the most important industries. Tourism has also boomed and the island has become popular for retirement in the sunshine with low taxes. Malta has a long history of civilization with remains found from Stone and Bronze Age peoples.
