Moldova TourMoldova (Moldavia) was a Soviet socialist republic from 1940 until 1991 when it became independent of the former USSR. It is bounded to the west by ROMANIA and to the north, east and south by UKRAINE. The republic consists of a hilly plain that rises to 429 m (1408 ft) in the centre. Its main rivers are the Prut in the west and the Dniester in the north and east. Moldova's soils are fertile, and crops grown include wheat, corn, barley, tobacco, sugar beet, soybeans and sunflowers. There are also extensive fruit orchards, vineyards and walnut groves. Wildlife is abundant such as roe deer, weasles, martens and badgers. Beekeeping and silkworm breeding are widespread throughout the country. Food processing is the main industry, particularly sugar refining and wine making. Other industries include metal working, engineering and the manufacture of electrical equipment. After independence the economy declined, inflation soared and assistance was gained from the IMF and others.
