Portugal TourPortugal, in the south-west corner of Europe, makes up about 15% of the Iberian peninsula and is the least developed in western Europe. The most mountainous areas of Portugal lie to the north of the river Tagus. In the north-east are the steep sided mountains of Tras-os-Montes and to south of this the Douro valley, running from the Spanish border to Oporto, on the Atlantic coast. South of the Tagus river is the Alentajo, with its wheat fields and cork plantations, which continues to the hinter-land of the Algarve with its beautiful groves of almond, fig and olive trees. Agriculture employs one quarter of the labour force, and crops include wheat, maize, grapes and tomatoes. Portugal's most important natural resources are its minerals, largely developed after World War II, and include coal, iron ore, tin and coper. Port and Madeira wine are renowned and the country is a main exporter of olive oil. Manufacturing industry includes textiles, clothing, footwear, food processing and cork products. Tourism, particularly in the south, is the main foreign currency earner.
