Romania TourRomania apart from a small extension towards the Black Sea, Romania is almost a circular country. It is located in south-east Europe and border by UKRAINE, HUNGARY, SERBIA and BULGARIA. The Carpathian Mountains run through the north, east and centre of Romania and these are enclosed by a ring of rich agricultural plains which are flat in the south and west but hilly in the east. The core of Romania is Transylvania within the Carpathian arc. Romania's main river is the Danube which forms a delta in its lower course. The country has cold snowy winters and hot summers. Agriculture in Romania has been neglected in favour of industry but major crops include maize, sugar beet, wheat, potatoes and grapes for wine. There are now severe food short-ages with high unemployment and a low standard of living. Industry is state owned and includes mining, mechanical engineering and chemicals. Forests support timber and furniture making industries in the Carpathians. After the overthrow of the Communist regime in 1989, a new constitution was aproved by referendum.
