Slovakia TourSlovakia (Slovak Republic) was constituted on 1 January, 1993 as a new independent nation, following the dissolution of the 74 year old federal republic of Czechoslovakia. Landlocked in central Europe, its neighbours are the CZECH REPUBLIC to the west, POLAND to the north, AUSTRIA and HUNGARY to the south, and a short border with UKRAINE in the east. The northern half of the republic is occupied by the Tatra Mountains which form the northern arm of the Carpathian Mountains. This region has vast forests and pastures used for intensive sheep grazing, and is rich in high-grade minerals such as copper, iron, zinc and lead. The southern part of Slovakia is a plain drained by the Danube and its tributaries. Farms, vineyards, orchards and pastures for stock form the basis of southern Slovakia's economy. Slovakia has many economic and environmental problems as a legacy of the inefficient industrialisation of the old regime. In the early 1990s unemployment increased and inflation was high, resulting in a lowering in the standard of living. Tourism is now increasing at the ski resorts and historic cities.
