Slovenia TourSlovenia is a which made a unilateral declaration of independence from former YUGOSLAVIA on 25 June, 1991. Sovereignty was not formally recognized by the European Community and the United Nations until early in 1992. It is bounded to the north by AUSTRIA, to the west by ITALY, to the east by HUNGARY, and to the south by CROATIA. Most of Slovenia is situated in the Karst Plateau and in the Julian Alps which has Mount Triglav as its highest point at 2863 m (9393 ft). Although farming and live-stock raising are the chief occupations, Slovenia is very industrialized and urbanized. Iron, steel and aluminium are produced, and mineral resources include oil, coal, lead, uranium and mercury. There is also natural gas and petroleum. Tourism is an important industry. The Julian Alps are renowned for their scenery, and the Karts Plateau contains spectacular cave systems. The north-east of the republic is famous for its wine production. Slovenia has also been successful in establishing many new light industries and this has given the country a well-balanced economic base for the future with unemployment lessening and industrial output increasing.
