Sweden TourSweden is a large country in northern Europe which makes up half of the Scandinavian peninsula. It stretches from the Baltic Sea north, to well within the Arctic Circle. The south is generally flat with many lakes, the north mountainous, and along the coast there are over 20,000 islands and islets. Summers are warm but short while winters are long and cold. In the north snow may lie for four to seven months. Dairy farming is the predominant agricultural activity and also the production of live-stock including cattle, pigs and sheep. Only 7% of Sweden is cultivated, with the emphasis on fodder crops, potatoes, rape seed, grain and sugar beet. About 57% of the country is covered in forest, and the sawmill, wood pulp and paper industries are all of great importance. Sweden is one of the world's leading producers of iron ore, most of which is extracted from within the Arctic Circle. Other main industries are engineering and electrical goods, motor vehicles and furniture making. In a referendum during 1994, Swedish voters approved of membership to the European Union and became a member on 1st January, 1995.
