United Kingdom (UK) TourUnited Kingdom (UK) situated in north-west Europe, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises the island of Great Britain and the north-east of Ireland, plus many smaller islands, especially off the west coast of Scotland. The south and east of Britain is low-lying, and Pennines form a backbone running though northern England. Scotland has the largest area of upland, and Wales is a highland block. Northern Ireland has a few hilly areas. The climate is cool temperate with mild conditions and an even annual rainfall. The principal crops are wheat, barley, sugar beet, fodder crops and potatoes. Livestock includes cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. Fishing is important off the east coast. The UK is primarily a highly urbanised industrial and commercial country, although the recession has left high unemployment in some areas and led to the decline of some of the older industries, such as coal, textiles and heavy engineering. A growing industry is electronics, much of it defence-related. Due to the large population, around 60% of its foodstuffs is imported and also approximately 90% of timber. The UK pioneered the development of nuclear energy for electricity production and by the early 1990s about 16% was suplied by this method.
