Bulgaria is a south-east European republic located on the east Balkan peninsula and has a coast on the Black Sea. It is bounded to the north by Romania, west by Serbia and The Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia and south by Greece and Turkey. The center of Bulgaria is crossed from west to east by the Balkan Mountains. The south of the country has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters. Further north the temperatures become more extreme and rainfall is higher in summer. The main river in Bulgaria is the Danube and about a third of the country is covered with forests. Traditionally Bulgaria is an agricultural country and a revolution in farming during the 1950s has led to great increases in output. This was due to the collectivization of farms and the use of more machinery, fertilizers and irrigation. Each agricultural region now has its own specialized type of farming.Increased mechanization led to more of the workforce being available to work in mines and industry. However, the country has suffered very high rates of inflation and unemployment in the early 1990s since the break up of the former Soviet Union, with whom Bulgaria had very close trade links. Tourism flourishes over 10,000,000 people visiting the Black Sea resorts annually.
