Cyprus Tour

Cyprus is an island, which lies in the eastern Mediterranean about 85 km (53 miles) south of TURKEY. It has a long thin panhandle and is divided from west to east by two parallel ranges of mountains which are separated by a wide central plain open to the sea at either end. The highest point is Mount Olympus (1951 m/640I ft) in the south-west. The climate is Mediterranean with very hot dry summers and warm damp winters. This contributes towards the great variety of crops grown e.g. early potatoes, vegetables, cereals, tobacco, olives, bananas and grapes and this accounts for about 17% of the land. The grapes are used for the strong wines and sherries for which Cyprus is famous. The main mineral found is copper while asbestos, gypsum and iron pyrites are also found. Fishing is a significant industry, but above all the island depends on visitors and it is the tourists industry which has led to a recovery in the economy since 1974. There are no railways on the island although it does possess three international airports.
